I was an amateur Wizard

As a passion-project, I’d been making natural skin care and potions for years. In 2017, I launched Gnarly Joe from my garden shed.

It started with the 4am Grind.

As a small skin care brand with limited resources, the only way to start was at 4am; 7 days a week. During weekends and school holidays my daughters helped, filling jars, labelling bottles & packing orders (don’t worry, I’m ethical and they were well-paid).

Mistakes were made…

The first 5 years were tough. There were spillages (and worse). But our commitment to making quality skin & beard care never wavered.

And here we are today!

I say ‘we’ but my daughters decided to take early retirement. Smart girls. Me? I’m still grinding, ‘wizarding’ and spreading the word.

Why do you use natural ingredients?

Years ago, I discovered that up to 60% of topicals (things we spread on our skin), get absorbed into our blood stream. We need to question what’s in the skin care we use, and make more informed choices.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced?

Being small, using natural ingredients, trying to compete with big brands who mass-manufacture to a low price using chemicals.

Finally, you’re very prominent within your brand! Why?

I wanted to be open, visible and accountable. This isn’t a faceless, corporate business. There’s a real, beating heart behind it.
